Teotihuacan was the place that got us most excited in Mexico. The sun pyramid in Teotihuacan is the biggest pyramid where you can stand on the top. There are a lot of pyramids of different sizes at the archeological site where you can enjoy a nice view. The first thing that comes to mind when you speak of pyramids are the pyramids of Egypt. But the green surrounded pyramids in Teotihuacan are just as impressive.
General info about Teotihuacan
Teotihuacan was listed as a UNESCO heritage in 1987. The pyramids are thought to be Aztec pyramids but the Aztec actually found the area deserted. Teotihuacan means “where people become gods” and is called the city of gods.
It is unknown who lived in Teotihuacan before the Aztec, but it is understood from recent research, that there have lived different groups of people.
There are some mysteries about Teotihuacan, a few of them are:
- It is still not clear why the people living in Teotihuacan, suddenly left their city.
- Just like the Giza pyramids of Egypt, the buildings in Teotihuacan are also aligned as a reflection of the Orion stars.
- In 1906, archeologist found that the Sun pyramid contains black mica. The closest place where this can be obtained is oddly Brazil.
The biggest pyramid is the Sun pyramid with the measures of 90 meters, 220 x 225. You can go all the way up. The moon pyramid is 43 meters high, 140 x 150 meters. You cannot go all the way up the moon pyramid, only till the half.
The pyramids are spread over a huge area. If you want to do it right, you need at least 3/4 hours. Especially to enjoy the view from on top of the pyramids.
For a pleasant trip, put on some comfortable shoes. Also, take an umbrella and a raincoat with you. If it rains, you have absolutely no shelter in this area. The stairs of the pyramids are very steep, so do be careful.
